Changelog

Changes to the NameBeta MCP server, newest first. Each entry gives the date, the server version and what changed: tools added, removed or renamed, fields added or removed, quota rules, and clients we have checked.

The version is the one the server reports in serverInfo when a client sends initialize. Service level says how far in advance breaking changes are announced here.

Responses

  • Every request is answered with a plain JSON body (Content-Type: application/json) instead of a one-event SSE stream. Clients send the same Accept header as before. See Endpoint and transport.
  • A JSON-RPC batch (an array body) is refused with 400 and error -32600. The MCP specification dropped batching in its 2025-06-18 revision.

Quotas

  • A call over a limit gets 429 Too Many Requests with a Retry-After header, for both the hourly and the daily limit. Before, an hourly overrun returned 423. The error message now says which limit was reached, and error.data.retryAfter repeats the header. See Quotas.

Tools

  • All five tools declare the annotations readOnlyHint: true, destructiveHint: false and openWorldHint: true. See Behavior hints. No tool, argument or response field changed.

Clients

  • Added pages for VS Code, with a one-click install link, Gemini CLI and Windsurf, checked against each vendor's documentation.
  • Corrected Cursor: it does not support Client ID Metadata Documents, so it needs a pre-registered client ID. Gemini CLI does too.

  • Claude Code 2.1.283 tested end to end. Claude.ai, ChatGPT and Cursor checked against vendor documentation; Codex checked against Codex CLI 0.158.0.

First release in the current form.

  • Endpoint. One endpoint, POST https://namebeta.com/api/mcp, Streamable HTTP without sessions.
  • Sign-in. OAuth 2.1 with the user's NameBeta account: Client ID Metadata Documents or a pre-registered client ID, no Dynamic Client Registration. The server advertises the scopes profile email and checks the token audience, not its scopes.
  • Tools. check_availability, compare_prices, suggest_domains, lookup_whois and lookup_dns, each with an output schema and structured content.
  • Quotas. Tool calls count against the user's NameBeta plan, in the same buckets as the website.
